The Gran Hotel Ciudad de México, situated on the southern edge of Mexico City's historic Zócalo, is a captivating blend of history, architecture, and luxury. Originally constructed in 1899 as the "Centro Mercantil," one of Mexico's first department stores, the building was designed by architect Adamo Boari, who also designed the Palacio de Bellas Artes. It was the first structure in Mexico City to employ the "Chicago" technique, utilizing iron and concrete, and showcased an eclectic style with elements of Art Nouveau and Art Deco. The building's most iconic feature is its stunning stained-glass ceiling, designed by French artisan Jacques Grüber in 1908, comprising over 20,000 pieces of colored glass.
In 1968, the building was transformed into a hotel to accommodate visitors for the Mexico City Olympic Games. Today, the Gran Hotel Ciudad de México offers 60 elegantly appointed rooms that blend traditional charm with modern amenities such as 50-inch flat-screen TVs, free Wi-Fi, and minibars. Guests can dine at the rooftop Terraza restaurant, which provides panoramic views of the Zócalo and serves traditional Mexican cuisine. The hotel's rich history and architectural splendor have made it a popular filming location, notably appearing in the James Bond films "Licence to Kill" and "Spectre."
