By Air:
 
Fly into Kansai International Airport (KIX) near Osaka.
 
From the airport, take a train to Tanabe (around 2.5 to 3 hours). Tanabe is a common starting point for the trail.
 
By Train:
 
From Osaka or Kyoto, take a JR Limited Express Kuroshio train to Kii-Tanabe Station (2–3.5 hours).
 
From Tokyo, take the Shinkansen to Shin-Osaka, then transfer to the Kuroshio train.
 
By Road:
 
Renting a car from Osaka or Wakayama is also an option if you want more flexibility.
 
Driving to Tanabe takes about 2.5 to 3 hours from Osaka.
 
Once in Tanabe, there are local buses that take you to the different trailheads (like Takijiri-oji or Hongu). Most of the Kumano Kodo routes are not circular, so plan transportation back from your end point.
